Implementing the Santiago Principles: Lessons from member self-assessments

Since the promulgation of the Generally Accepted Principles and Practices for sovereign wealth funds (the Santiago Principles), the International Forum of Sovereign Wealth Funds (IFSWF) has sought to promote best practices in governance, investment and risk management amongst its members.

Since 2016, all our full members have completed and published a self-assessment of their implementation of the Santiago Principles every three years. On the occasion of the third triennial assessment, we have compiled the three analyses of the self-assessments undertaken by Professor Patrick Schena of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Massachusetts and have complemented this with an essay on the practical application of best governance practices for sovereign wealth funds by Richard Collins, Former Managing Director and Head of Compliance at the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.
